Energy for the Future: What resources should we use?

Summary: This activity allows you to investigate alternative energy sources for their Neighborhood of the Future.

Introduction: Traditional energy resources that are commonly used today are rapidly disappearing. Many of these sources also produce a high level of pollution and waste. Several alternative sources of energy offer a promise of cleaner and more efficient production of energy. In this activity you will research on the web some of these possible solutions for the energy needs of the future.

Materials:

Classroom Management: Students will need to research on the web or in the library. They should be reminded to create bookmarks (or favorites) for the sites that they discover in any searches so that they can share their findings with the class.

Activity Steps:

1. Consider whether or not the energy sources you are using now will need to be supplemented or altogether changed one hundred years from now. If your neighborhood is already using energy in a sustainable way, you might spend the class time joining another classroom in another part of the world, one that, for example, has more pressure to increase its energy resources.

2. Discuss within your group possible energy sources. Which are reasonable for your neighborhood to use? Alternatives might include:

3. Suggested Web sites on sustainable energy include:
